Hours per week: 35 - 38 hours

Anticipated start & end dates: April through October

Compensation: Starting pay is $20 hour for farm work and $35 hour for estate work

Job Description:

This position includes work at Eden Street Flowers and on three private estates, with time equally divided between the operations (50/50%). We sell seedlings and flowers through a flower CSA, an online retail shop, and to wholesale customers (grocery stores and local designers throughout the state). We grow over 25 varieties of flowers each with their own production techniques and harvest standards, and manage native and non-native perennials as well as annuals on local estates. A high level of focus, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as a team are crucial. Communication and consistency form the backbone of the work and are essential to a smooth season. While working with flowers and outside can be beautiful work, it is also sweaty, dirty, tiring, and tedious. Work is fast-paced at times and physically demanding. After training, you will be expected to navigate to-do lists, participate in record keeping, rapidly move from one project to the next or one property to the next, communicate regularly, and clearly understand the workspace and workflow.

Job Requirements:

Efficiency and strong work ethic

Focus and attention to detail

Excellent listening skills and communication skills

Willingness to interact with team members and clients with a positive attitude, kindness, and compassion

Physical stamina for planting, lifting 50 lbs, and working in a variety of weather conditions, on your feet for a day’s work

Reliable transportation to and from work

Strong interest in local and seasonal flowers

Estate work includes but is not limited to:

Assist with seasonal opening, closing, planting, and maintenance of private residential gardens and containers. Prep beds, transplant, water, amend soils, prune, dead-head, scout and manage pests and disease, lift heavy bales of soil or move compost, harvest, stake, weed.

Cut Flower Production work includes but is not limited to:

Assist with greenhouse production including planting, watering, scouting and managing pests and disease, deadheading, staking, harvesting, clean up, and maintenance. Assist with field production including bed preparation, transplanting, weeding, scouting, mulching, trellising, pruning, deadheading, harvesting of annuals and perennials, and clean up. Monitoring field irrigation and watering needs. Lifting heavy bales of soil or compost. Post-harvest processing of cut flowers including maintaining clean spaces and coolers.

Work Environment and Schedule:

Eden Street Flowers is located in Hulls Cove. We serve three estates, two in Bar Harbor and one in Seal Harbor. The team will have three full-time employees, 4-5 days/week. The anticipated start and end dates are April through October, with a potential start in mid-March and end in early November. Work days are typically from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, with longer hours in the spring, and include a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Requests for time off must be approved in advance.

Compensation:

Competitive farm and estate compensation based on experience. Preference for someone with at least one year of farming and estate experience.

Benefits:

Request for time off must be approved in advance and is encouraged during slower periods of the season. I value a work-life balance and believe time off after extended periods of hustling is a necessary way to keep momentum throughout the season
